Saving the Best for Last...

My Man preparing to sing at a wedding

I talk alot about marriage because I feel very passionate about the subject. There are too many marriages crumbling around me to ignore or get complacent about it. Feminism has taken a toll on too many men and women and rendered the perfect marriage (if it allows for marriage at all) a complete opposite picture than the one outlined in God's Word. So, I talk about it and the one I have married often. I told you here how we met and gave you reasons I love being married to my husband here. It has been over 10 years since we said "I do" at the altar and it gets better all the time. He is just simply wonderful, and I am so very blessed to have him and to be his!

TODAY...do something special for your spouse and let him know how much you appreciate him.

THEN...leave me a comment telling me how your husband exemplifies Christ.

REMEMBER...Christ is returning for His Bride, the Church, any moment! What joy when we are together with Him forever!

Sweetest Day Celebration: Children

I write much about my experiences with my children on this blog. You may feel as if you already know them to some extent. I'll never forget the first time each little one was placed in my arms. I wasn't prepared for the way they changed my life completely. It is a good change but one that cannot be explained until it is experienced.

Jessica on our summer vacation

Jessica is my only daughter and becoming more of my friend every day. We are much alike, and I have learned much about myself by mothering her. She has very decided opinions (wonder where that comes from?) and we have many interesting conversations. We enjoy our tea parties and sipping hot drinks together at Panera Bread. We occasionally exercise together--although she usually drops out on me 10 minutes into it. We have graduated from kindergarten and first grade together. I am blessed to have such a sweet daughter and I thank the Lord for her!

Jeffery at his last birthday party

With the birth of my first son, I entered a world to which I'm still trying to get adjusted--mothering sons! He is everything I am not: enthralled by trucks and motorcycles,  loves wild jumps off the tops of things, rough and ready to wrestle at a second's notice. Yet I love it, especially when he finally winds down and wraps his arms around me and gives me a bear hug. I thank the Lord for my little boy who is growing more like his daddy every day.

Jerrod is just "my baby". He still loves being toted around on my hip or sitting in Daddy's lap, and he has always been mostly happy. He takes his time sitting, crawling, standing and walking. I think the Lord blessed me with him so I can enjoy each stage and not rush through them like I did the other two. He already prefers Jeffery's cars (and accompanying "brrrrr" noises) to Jessica's dolls and has endeared himself to all of our hearts. I thank the Lord for my Little Man!

TODAY...thank the Lord for your children, even if they are grown, and tell them how much you love and appreciate them. If you don't have children, find some in your family or church and do something special for them.

THEN...leave me a comment and tell me why you have the most precious children in the whole world.

REMEMBER...God sees us as His children and gave His own Son for us.

Sweetest Day Celebration: Parents and In-Laws

My wonderful, Godly parents

I try not to take it for granted that I have been blessed with wonderful parents. They have devoted their lives to each other first, then to their children and then to ministry. They've always been my cheerleaders, confidantes and dearest friends. As I have become a parent, I realize just how much they sacrificed for me and my siblings over the years. I thank the Lord for this wonderful gift!

Perhaps more amazing is the fact that I am also blessed with great parents-in-law. My husband and I hear couples complaining about their in-laws and we just don't get it. We both felt like we received a second set of parents when we got married. My in-laws treat me like part of the family. Sometimes when my mother-in-law and I are together shopping people think I'm her daughter. Again, I realize that not everyone is so blessed, so I thank the Lord for my parents-in-love.

TODAY...thank the Lord for your parents and in-laws. Call each of them and tell them how much they mean to you. If you have a bad relationship with any of them, do something today to build bridges in the relationship no matter how small. Our relationships are the greatest treasure we have here on earth. Let's cherish and grow them!

THEN...leave me a comment telling me why your mother, father, mother-in-law, or father-in-law is the best in the world.

REMEMBER...that we are born AND adopted into the family of God and He is our Heavenly Father who loves us and gave His very best for us.

Sweetest Day Celebration: Siblings

I know I did a whole week of posts on siblings and told about my own here and here. However, I couldn't honor the special people in my life without including them. My brother and sister have been my closest friends for my whole life (with a few lapses in the early years!). I still talk to or see them at least weekly, even though my sister is miles away and my brother and I keep different schedules.

My siblings and I with our mom goofing off after a volleyball game!

When I got married, I instantly received three more siblings. My new sister-in-law Mandi had married several months before us, so her husband was my new brother-in-law as well as my husband's brother, Justin. As the family has grown, we've been blessed with 4 adorable nephews and a new sister-in-law when my brother-in-law, Justin, got married to Shauna. When we all get together, it is a little wild (with 7 children between us!), but we have a blast!

I received another brother when my baby sister got married last year. He's a great guy and puts up with her and takes great care of her, so he fits in perfectly!

I love them all, and thank God for them often!

TODAY...meet a sibling for lunch or call them on the phone. Tell them how much you appreciate them and love them. If they ask what you want, assure them you'll try to be more regular about your expressions of love!

THEN...leave me a comment telling me about a special relationship you have with your sibling(s).

MOST IMPORTANTLY...Remember Jesus is our Older Brother, interceding for us daily to the Father!

Sweetest Day Celebration: Friends

They come in all colors, shapes and sizes. Their personalities are each unique and different. Each of them contribute to our lives in a special way. What would we do without friends? I couldn't begin to honor all my friends, but a few stand out in my mind as I write this.

Some of my oldest friends are those I've known since starting school with them in second grade. Over the years since graduation, I have kept in contact with 3 of them. Recently, we were all able to get together for our 10th high school reunion with our families. It was so much fun to catch up, reminisce and watch our children act as goofy as we did so many years ago!

Our four families at the high school reunion

I am an Anne of Green Gables fan, and I marvel at how few "kindred spirits" there really are in life. A few of my friends are such that we can go without seeing one another for years, yet when we get together we can just start where we left off. One of my dear "kindred spirits" is Trina. Another is Emily. I just appreciate them so much!

I couldn't write a post about friends without mentioning my online friends. If you are a blogger, you may understand this connection. However, some of my online friends I met way before the days of Facebook and blogs. Sarah has always challenged me on just about everything I believe in! We are truly an example of "iron sharpening iron" and share only our love for Jesus in similarities. Jennifer and I have prayed together over IM and encouraged each other in our marriage and parenting journeys. Santina, who you met last week, has taught me so much about embracing simple life and enjoying my family. My Holiness Highlights ladies have been such a blessing, and I have even met a few of them in "real" life. Angela motivates me to be healthier, even going so far as to break it to me that a caramel latte is a dessert and therefore not on my healthy eating plan! Of course, I could mention many of you, my readers, as newer online friends as well. You're all great!

Speaking of online friends, I have just accepted the Good Morning Girls challenge given by Courtney at Women Living Well. It is made up of a few ladies from my church. It has been such a blessing to have a group of like-minded ladies to which I am accountable for daily quiet time with the Lord!

I could mention a host of others that have contributed to my life over the years: Sherilyn, Tonya, Pam, Renae, Becky and so many more! I love you all and thank you for sharing, praying, laughing, crying, loving and living together over the years!

TODAY...pick three friends you haven't talked to in a while and call, e-mail, write a letter or send a message on Facebook to them. Tell them how much they mean to you, and if that makes you feel too sappy, just tell them I told you to do it!

THEN....leave me a comment telling me how a friend has particularly blessed your life.

MOST IMPORTANTLY...Remember the Friend that sticks closer than a brother, Who gave His life for you. I am so thankful that my Lord Jesus is the dearest Friend of all!

Celebrating Sweetest Day Week

As you know, I'm all about celebrations and Sweetest Day is coming up this week. Now, don't start with the "Bah, humbugs" and grumblings about "Hallmark holidays". I'm not selling candy or anything! :-) I think it is always a great idea to honor those that are special in our lives. Although Sweetest Day is generally regarded as a second Valentine's Day and makes us think of time with our husbands, it is actually a holiday for sweet gestures towards all of our loved ones.

I'm going to share about some "sweet" people in my life this week, and I hope to hear about yours. You can participate on your blog or just in the comments, but I'd love to hear about your special people. I will try to post a new one each day to honor and give you a little "assignment" you can do for your own special person to honor.

So, get your thinking caps on and think of some special people in your life, then be sure to stop back every day next week to see how to honor those people!

This is meant totally tongue-in-cheek therefore it need not offend you if any of the examples are actual scenarios in your life! :-)

Fiction Friday

Once upon a time there was a basket of freshly-gathered eggs sitting in the farm's
refrigerator. With nothing better to do, they began talking about what they wanted to
become.

One egg commented, "I hope that I will be poached in the microwave. It looks like
such a high-tech machine. I'm sure it would be a thrilling experience!"

"Not me!" another one spoke up. "The old fashioned way is the best for me. I want to be
hard-boiled on the stove top."

"The old fashioned way is nice, but boiling isn't much of an adventure," said
another. "I want to get out of my shell to be cooked. My dream is to be a fried egg!"

"I agree, I'd like to get out of my shell, but I also would like to mix with some others.
I want to be a scrambled egg."

The last egg had been very quiet throughout this exchange, but now it vehemently declared,
"I will not be cooked at all!"

"What?!" exclaimed the egg nearest.

"You cannot be eaten if you are not cooked!" chimed in another one.

"Exactly!" the rebellious egg affirmed. "I do not want to be eaten. What a waste!"

"But," sputtered the egg aspiring to be hard-boiled, "eggs were MADE to be eaten. That is
our purpose in life!" All the other eggs agreed.

"That's what THEY want you to believe!" the egg motioned to the refrigerator door. "After
all, they get all the benefits. They get to consume an excellent egg and think nothing of
it. But we, on the other hand, have nothing to show for it. We are simply gone and no one
remembers us at all after a few days."

The others looked at one another skeptically. Could it really be true? It was all just a
selfish ploy on the part of the people? Was there more to life for an egg? The egg hoping
to be poached in the microwave cried, "But don't you remember the question of which came first,
the chicken or the egg? We've always known that it was the chicken because that is where
we came from. God created the first chicken, and eggs have always been. God has always
allowed us to be eaten, at least those of us that didn't become chickens."

"It's a little late for that," the egg dreaming of frying interjected.

"But who said that anyway? How do we know that God created us or that He wanted us to be
eaten?" This question quite stymied the eggs, and they rested in their basket in silence
for a good while pondering it.

Finally, one brave egg exclaimed, "I don't know quite how we came to know it, but I know
it is true. After all, it works perfectly. Every good egg worth its' yolk aspires to be
cooked and eaten."

"Well I, for one, am going to be different!" the nonconformist egg replied. "You all may
waste away your life in the belly of a person, but I will get my fulfillment out of life.
Just watch!"

"But what do you plan to do?" asked one of the others.

"I will go away from the basket and no one will find me. I will do whatever I want, and
long after you are eaten, I will be fulfilling an egg's best dream."

"What could an egg possibly dream other than to be cooked and eaten?" muttered the
proponent of scrambling. But the stubborn egg had made up its' mind and was not to be
dissuaded by those "brainwashed, hard-shelled creatures." So, it made its way to the bottom
of the vegetable bin and was indeed missed the whole following week as the farmer's wife
used each of the other eggs.

The egg that desired the high-tech lifestyle was indeed poached and enjoyed providing such
a healthy meal for the farmer's lunch. The egg that wished to be hard-boiled the old
fashioned way, bobbled merrily in the rolling water and giggled as the farmer sprinkled
salt over its' new yolk. The next egg was fried to perfection and had a wonderful
conversation with the bacon who was happy to join him in providing a delightful breakfast
for the farmer before he went to work in the field. "Beats a pig sty any day!" were the
last words that little egg heard it say. The egg that enjoyed mixing with others, reveled
in the experience of joining the milk in the bowl and being whipped with a fork into a
lovely froth. They made a great team as they were pushed about the pan, and they were very
happy to meet the fresh-grated cheese the farmer's wife sprinkled atop them before placing
them on the farmer's plate. So it was that none of them ever did know the end of the
stubborn egg hiding away in the vegetable drawer.

That poor egg thought that everyone would respect it just because it was an egg,
but the onions and peppers only sneered. "Don't you know that eggs are meant to be eaten?"
The baking soda which graced the back of the refrigerator to fight odors told him that
being out in the cold refrigerator world sounded good at first, but after a while life got
a little stale. Refusing to listen, the egg tried to skip to the butter crock only to be
shoved out by a disgusted stick of butter. "Of all the things an egg can be, why would you
try to be something you're not designed to be? An egg can never become butter!" That shove
proved to be the end of that egg's aspiring dreams. The next morning, the farmer's wife
opened the door to see a horrific mess on the bottom of her squeaky clean refrigerator.
"Oh my! How did this happen? I'm sure I didn't drop any of the eggs." The last thing the
broken egg heard as he was put into the trash to rot was a sigh and the words,
"What a waste!"

Though humorous perhaps as it relates to eggs, this is the sad tale of many a
woman. Determining to "be her own person" and refusing to "waste her life on others", she
steps away from the role God graciously designed for her to fill. She becomes like the
stubborn egg trying to fill the roles designed for others. At best, she will spend her life
secretly thinking things are "a little stale". However, when she gets to the end of her
life and realizes that her life was lived only for herself and is broken and rotten, she
will be forced to admit, "What a waste!"

On the other hand, those women that embrace their roles of wife and mother find that life is far from boring or wasted. There are so many opportunities open to them as keepers of their homes. Perhaps they will do things the old fashioned way as did the hard-boiled egg. Or maybe they prefer the glamor of the high-tech like the poached egg. They may enjoy a solitary life of quiet or they may mix with other women sharing the joy of a life dedicated to their families. The possibilities for women are endless if they desire to be women as God created them to be.
