You are What You Eat

As newborn babes, desire the sincere milk of the word, that ye may grow thereby:
If so be ye have tasted that the Lord is gracious.

I Peter 2:2-3

I'm sure you have heard the phrase, "You are what you eat" many times over the years. Lots of times it has been used to try to get people to eat healthier, with the idea of a longer life span. However, I'm not trying to change your eating habits; but I WOULD like to take that thought and spiritualize it...

If our physical diet determines the overall health of our bodies, wouldn't our sprititual diet have an effect on our soul? You see, what we consistantly "feed" on spiritually will ultimately determine how we grow. If we are to "grow in grace" as it says in 2 Peter 2:18, then we had better be awfully careful about the diet were eating. What we allow through the eye and ear gates should be things that are pleasing to our Heavenly Father. He knows what is best for us, just as an earthly parent knows what is best for their child. No parent would allow their child to eat something that would be harmful to them no matter how "good" it may seem to the child's eyes. Our Heavenly Father has set some rules and guidelines in His Word for us to follow, not to punish us or make us miserable, but to help us to grow. If we are feeding on the same diet that the world is, how do we expect to grow in grace?

God has called us to something better (healthier, if you will). He tells us in 2 Corinthians 6:17 to "be separate" from the world. If we are feeding on the Word and allowing God to guide our every step then we will be a healthy Christian that God can use and be pleased with. However, if we allow the things of the world and its pleasures and attractions to so "fill our bellies" so that there is no room left for God's "good things" that He is offering us, then we will be weak, sickly and ultimately dead.

Our Father has such good things for us! Let's not fill our souls with the "junk food" of this world; but let's allow Him to feed our souls so that we can grow into a people that He can use!
