Words, Reading and Writing or Why I'm Blogging Again

"Once upon a time..."

Just the words evoke memories of stories told and loved and even the youngest and oldest among us perk up their ears when these words are uttered. In my home growing up, we never had a television or VCR. We didn't own our first computer until I was 16 years old.

"Ranger Bill! Warrior of the Woodlands!"
I remember gathering around the radio to listen to the Saturday morning stories.

"When it is time to turn the page, you'll hear the chimes ring like this..."
I recall my collection of 50 books and dramatized stories which I had memorized by the age of 4.

There was Dr. Seuss and Winnie the Pooh. Cinderella, Snow White and Robin Hood. There were the Beverly Cleary books, the Nancy Drew books and the Mandie books. There were the classics like Oliver Twist, Jane Eyre and Tom Sawyer. There were grandparents that read painfully slow, but I enjoyed sitting on their lap so much I dared not interrupt.

My mother would send me outside because I had sat reading too long, then I would read my book under the tree or even in the pool. My second grade teacher thought it was great that I read so often; other teachers weren't impressed unless I was reading my textbooks.

Words have painted pictures since the beginning of time. God created His beautiful masterpiece of the universe by the use of words. Jesus is called the Word, and we learn about God through the written Word we call the Bible.

Words and the reading of them is important, but one cannot read what is not first written. Adam spoke with God in the Garden of Eden, but were it not for Moses' careful recording of those early events, we would not know about them. David fought battles and ruled Israel as it's greatest king, but his greatest worth to us is the written record of his emotional battles in the Psalms. The apostles preached anointed sermons and did great miracles, but had they never written these things down, the Church would be missing much. We wouldn't know about the joys of Heaven if John had merely experienced them without writing down his vision.

So, I read. I live. I experience. I feel. I express emotion. I joy. I sorrow. I don't want to miss anything--not now, not many years from now. Therefore, I write.

"And they lived happily ever after."
Well, most of the time. After all, life isn't always a fairy tale. But it's sure a lot more unpredictable!

  2. Beautifully put. Thank you for giving another reason to blog. I do it for so many reasons...connect with other like minded people, share my thoughts and experiances as a momma of two little ones, keep up with others also in the trenches, find encouragement from those who have walked this heavily traveled path before me, and to share my good deals and finds with others. So, to add another reason as to why I make the time to blog would be this, to share what I am doing now so as to hopefully encourage others later on down the road. Thanks again. Sincerely, Mommy of two little blessings & so much more!
